Of the roughly 200 websites you build a year, how does it break down between Wix, WordPress, and Shopify? It sounds like those are the main systems you are using.

Those are the three main platforms. We're agnostic to the platform and work with almost everything, but those are our three go-to platforms. As of post-pandemic, 60% of our business has been Shopify because it's ecommerce related; everybody's trying to sell online; the stereotypical stuff. Over the last couple of years, WordPress has kind of gone down, and Wix has gone up in billings. At least internally, whatever we would have five years ago built on WordPress, we're building on Wix now.

Let’s dive in a bit deeper. Maybe you could talk about the pros and cons of Wix versus WordPress for the type of site that you would use either one of those two for.

Wix has upped their game over the last couple of years. 10 years ago, it was a different game. They were very focused on small businesses, but the direct-to-consumer performance wasn't there, and there weren't enough modules. It was a great drag-and-drop builder, but that's what you got. After they opened up dynamic pages, databases, Velo, Editor X, and all the different feature sets, it's been a huge competitor for WordPress internally. Anything that we can do on WordPress now we can do on Wix, if not more easily. WordPress would take us maybe two to three times longer to build than what we can do on Wix. It also depends on the client's budget, and if it's a smaller budget, then, hey, let's just bill our work; we're not going to lose it. There are no real major differences today. Five or 10 years ago, there was a drastic difference between WordPress and Wix, and you could do much more in WordPress. Today, whatever you can do on WordPress, you can do on Wix. There’s no real difference.

Got it. You mentioned speeds as being a big factor. Are there other things you would call out as an advantage or disadvantage?

Yes, Performance was a huge drag seven years ago. It took seven to 13 seconds to load back in the day. That was a huge downfall. I couldn't even pitch it to clients; it would take forever. Now performance is so fast. It's less than four seconds, which is the norm, but it's even faster. They've upped their game in terms of infrastructure and how content loads, so it's on point for user experience. That was a pretty big game-changer.
