Why did you say it's quirky?

When I first joined, someone told me, "This place is special. It's like nothing you've ever come across before." After six months, I told them, "I'm going to award you the understatement of the year award." It really was hard to explain. There were lots of good people, many who had been there a long time.

However, it was very vertically integrated, and there were situations where you wondered why certain departments weren't communicating. There was a lot of silo working and smoke and mirrors, where people weren't clear on things. Even those who had been there for a long time. For example, when you join a new business, you ask questions, and usually, someone might say, "Oh, yes, I can help you with that," or "I can't help you, but go talk to Jack. I'll introduce you." But here, you just got, "No, I don't know." That was it.

Do you think the ERP project they're starting, which I guess began when you were there, and the branch trading system update, which is happening first, are targeted at this problem? Are they trying to get a more holistic picture, or where is that coming from?

I think it's driven by the fact that their current platform is an old version of SAP, so it's a bit of a burning platform. They're forced to upgrade because, if I remember correctly, either this year or next year, it stops being supported.
