This might sound trivial, but for some reason, no one has given me a satisfactory answer. When it comes to heavy and bulky items, why have regional DCs and local DCs? Why not ship directly from your regional DC to the end customer?

For our company, if you order a table, for example, it may have a top and four legs. The top might be in the East Coast DC, and the legs might be in the West Coast DC.

Why would this happen in the first place?

It's due to different vendors. Our sourcing teams work with over 3,000 different manufacturing vendors. One team might manufacture the legs, and another might do the tabletop. It's not all from the same manufacturer.
