What is Synapse's market position and how does it compare to competitors such as Snowflake, Redshift or BigQuery?

Snowflake is a SaaS based product whereas the cheapest Synapse is PaaS. The second big differentiator is the underlying architecture which is an old SQL server. Synapse is built on legacy architecture, and the decoupling and clustering of data warehouses is not meant for the cloud. They were built using on-premise SQL Server and enhances from there. Snowflake was built directly on the cloud for the cloud, which makes a huge difference when it comes to scaling. Synapse is struggling in the industry to make that move simply because of the legacy architecture it was built on, which doesn't help them act quickly enough in that space. It has multiple problems including compute resources, scalability, administration and cost.

Are you saying they will not go to Azure for Synapse?

It only makes sense to go to Synapse if you are using other Azure products and your legacy data warehouse is SQL Server. The probability of that company using Synapse is a lot higher because your transition is smoother and you are used to the optimizations of on-prem SQL Server.
