Copart, IAA, & CCC: Progressive’s Power
In May 2026, S&P reported that Progressive became the number one US private auto insurer, surpassing State Farm for the first time since World War 2. It now generates ~$70bn of run-rate gross written premiums, far ahead of GEICO’s sub-$45bn.
Not only is Progressive’s growth interesting to study itself, the company’s ascent is shaping ecosystems that serve the insurance industry. Vendors such as Copart (salvage) and CCC (estimatics software) are losing volume due to Progressive’s growth. While this is impacting short-term organic growth rates, a more significant longer-term risk may lie in the second order effect of Progressive’s dominance.
Progressive has a unique philosophy in working with vendors. And by unique, we mean aggressively focused on cost.
