In an environment where oil prices are low and companies are cost-conscious, would simulation software be beneficial? Would you use it more on existing fields, or how does that work?

The challenges are multifaceted. Cost is not the only challenge. Compatibility and people's skills are also significant factors. For example, CMG STARS is a very good tool for certain types of models. Last year, I worked on two models using this robust tool. However, many companies, like Rock Flow Dynamics, are trying to replicate similar results. If one platform can offer multiple solutions, such as static modeling, dynamic subsurface modeling, and network modeling, it becomes more appealing. A single platform is cheaper for both the customer and the service provider because it consolidates services. Rock Flow Dynamics is slowly capturing the market.

If you're working for an Oman oil company and they're using a CMG product, does that mean they'll stay with that product, or do they switch?

They may switch. It depends on the cost. In terms of functionality or capability, CMG is number one. But people also consider the cost. For modeling purposes, we need software like Petrel, CMG, and maybe others. If a single platform can provide multiple modeling options, from static to network models, people might prefer it. For example, in Petrel RE or Intersect, you can do analytical models or run material balance. RFD also offers options for material balance analysis or well test analysis. People prefer to use a single platform for essential studies or modeling. Naturally, that platform or software group will have an advantage.
