Most law firms are not as global as service providers like CPA Global. CPA Global works with agents worldwide, covering around 200 jurisdictions. They have a network across all these jurisdictions and have negotiated favorable rates with agents. They also have systems to track all renewals, which law firms typically don't focus on, as they concentrate more on patent prosecutions, litigations, and drafting.

CPA Global, and now Questel, operate in this manner. CPA Global has acquired various IP management systems over the years, but they struggled with consolidation. When I was at CPA Global, we had about six IP management systems, and it was sometimes unclear which one to propose to clients. We usually recommended the most updated system.

IP management systems are related to renewals because they provide a comprehensive view of the portfolio, making it logical for clients to use the same provider for both services. Questel wanted a better IP management system, which is why they acquired Equinox. Equinox offers a robust IP management system, and Questel aims to use it to expand their renewal business as well.
