Verra Mobility then matches the vehicle and toll to the owner in their database. This is their secret sauce; they're extremely efficient at matching millions of vehicles because they manage seven million vehicles. It's a hub-and-spoke model with Verra Mobility at the center. They then identify, for instance, that Bob rented the car on Monday at 3 PM with Hertz. Verra Mobility charges the credit card you provided to Hertz when you rented the car.

So, those are the payment options for the customer. When the car passes the toll, the toll agency identifies the car, sends the information to Verra, and Verra matches it. This process can take a week, two weeks, or sometimes up to a month. By then, you've long finished renting the car. If you've rented for personal or business use, you might recognize this experience. Weeks later, you receive a bill from Hertz for tolls and fees, which is annoying, especially for corporate customers who must enter a second expense report and follow up. This delay isn't Verra Mobility's fault; it's just the processing timeline. The further away you are from charging a customer from the actual event, the higher the bad debt risk becomes. People might refuse to pay or dispute it.
