Could you explain what the certification basis is?

When you are an aircraft OEM like Boeing or Airbus and you want to create another aircraft, not necessarily a new one, you want to be able to go to an agency like the FAA or EASA and say, the 737 MAX will be certified by similarity to the 737 NG. Here is the small list of changes. Instead of undergoing a comprehensive certification program, which includes numerous tests such as lightning tests and bird strike tests, I will simply do a Delta certification. This is a minor certification based on the defined changes.

You mean the most outsourced content?

Exactly. Initially, United Technologies, now Collins Raytheon, received a massive award on the 787 to create all of the air management, cabin pressure, and much more. This almost buried United Technologies. Then Honeywell, my predecessor before I took over the business of air and thermal systems, won the parallel award on the A350, which was even larger. It included all of the valves, sensors, heat exchangers, and processors associated with the air and thermal systems, cabin pressure wing, anti-ice, as well as all of the ducting inside of the plane.
